Hopton C of E Primary Academy

Religious Education

Intent

Religious Education at Hopton C of E Primary Academy aims to develop children’s understanding about the world’s religions and cultures. Our students will learn about the variety of religions in the world we live in to increase their awareness and understanding of different cultures, faiths and world views. We teach using an approach of theology, human and social sciences and philosophy that enables learners to understand what drives people to live the way they do. This builds each child’s ‘religious literacy’ helping them understand the nature of religion and belief in the world in which they live. Children can expect that teaching and learning in Church schools will use an approach that engages with biblical text and theological ideas.

Through the provision of Religious Education at Hopton we aim to:

  • Provoke challenging questions about the purpose of life, beliefs, the self, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.
  • Develop pupils' knowledge and understanding of Christianity, other principal religions and worldviews that examine these questions, fostering personal reflection and spiritual development.
  • Encourage pupils to explore their own beliefs and worldview in the light of what they learn, as they examine issues of religious belief and faith.
  • Enable pupils to build their sense of identity and belonging, which helps them flourish within their communities and as citizens in a diverse society.
  • Teach pupils to develop respect for others, including people with different faiths and beliefs, and to help challenge prejudice.
  • Prompt pupils to consider their responsibilities to themselves and to others and to explore how they might contribute to their communities and to wider society.
  • Encourage empathy, generosity and compassion.
  • Develop a sense of awe and wonder in the world in which our children live.

Implementation

At Hopton C of E Primary Academy, we follow the Emmanuel Project, which has been set up by Diocese.  These are comprehensive plans which support the progression of Religious Education across the school. his scheme of work provides children with a wide range of inspiring opportunities following a six step learning process of Engage, Enquire, Explore, Evaluate, Express and Extend. Throughout their schooling, our children will explore many religions and increase their awareness of Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam and Humanism. The children develop their understanding of religious education through lessons, visits to places of worships, guest speakers and workshops. The Emmanuel Project uses big questions as central to its approach. These questions are then explored in different ways and children are encouraged to ask their own questions throughout.
