Early Years

Willow class teacher is Mr Craig Smith . He is supported by Mrs Hughes.

Welcome to Willow Class!

In Willow Class we teach the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum where we support each child to become an independent, active learner that learns through play and exploration. The teaching of the EYFS encompasses a combination of adult led play, teacher directed tasks, and child initiated play both indoors and outdoors whatever the weather! Staff carefully teach skills to each child, and provide opportunities through the continuous provision within the child’s learning environment for them to apply and practice these skills in their own play.

Each child will have their own Learning Journey which will contain evidence of their learning and experiences both at school and home. In Willow class we use the Tapestry online platform to record and display photos, videos and written observations which can be accessed by parents at any time using a secure login and password.

In addition to teaching maths and literacy inputs each day, we also teach a planned phonics session using the Read Write Inc programme to underpin children’s learning to read and write. We enjoy weekly forest school activities in our own designated woodland area, and plan weekly welly walks that see us out and about in the village and beyond.

There are seven areas of learning and development: within the 'Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum'

Prime Areas

Communication and Language

Physical Development

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Specific Areas

Literacy

Mathematics

Understanding the World

Expressive Arts and Design.

Our aim is for both you and your child to have a happy and confident beginning to an exciting learning journey with us. Together we can guide your child through this important year and lay the firm foundations for their school education.

Communication and Language

Within EYFS we develop the skills and confidence to express ourselves, and enjoy speaking and listening to each other and our teachers.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Within our Personal, Social and Emotional Development we learn to feel good about ourselves and others, and develop positive relationships.   This supports us in becoming independent, excited and motivated learners.

Physical Development

In EYFS making progress in Physical Development gives us confidence and enables us to feel the benefits of being healthy and active. We enjoy taking part in structured PE and dance sessions, improving our skills of co-ordination, control and movement.  Opportunities to develop gross and fine motor skills - e.g through using scissors, glue, paintbrushes and pencils are also encouraged through daily hands on planned and independent activities.

Literacy

In EYFS we like to read lots of different books with our friends and teachers.  We practise mark making, writing our names, letters, sounds and words in fun and creative ways.  We always make sure we are careful listeners when having conversations with everyone.

Mathematics

In this area of our learning we develop our mathematical understanding through stories, songs, games, everyday activities and imaginative play.  We also experiment and become confident and curious about numbers, shapes, patterns and measures.

Understanding the World

In this area of learning, we develop our knowledge, skills and understanding that help use to make sense our local community and the world, with opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

Expressive Arts and Design

This area of learning includes art, music, dance, drama and imaginative play – we enjoy trying new experiences and express ourselves in a variety of ways.

Creativity is an important part of successful learning; it enables children to make connections between experiences, solve problems and be inventive.
